Grass seeds are polar and line up with electric field lines. ASU copyright The seeds are sprinkled on a glass plate supported by rubber 'feet' on an overhead projector. ASU copyright A patch cable with banana plug ends is connected to ground and the other end of the wire to one of the contacts. The other contact is connected to the Van de Graaff generator. The contacts sit on various tin foil shapes attached to the glass. ASU copyright A chain is attached to the top of the VDG with electricians tape. ASU copyright A paper chute facilitates removing the grass seed. A small mallet is used to tap the glass to align the seeds. The shaker bottle contains grass seed.
