4D50.15 Diffusion Demonstration Model Rating:

Captions and Credits to the left in the sidebar.

Description: A box has a divider with holes in it representing a diffusion membrane. There are equal volumes of large red beads on one side and small white beads on the other. By shaking the beads migrate across the "membrane".

Room:PS F175 Location: Be2 Sublocation:
Type: Date Added:6/17/2004 Condition:
Quantity:1 Complete: Last updated: 6/17/2004
Purpose: Molecules move from an area of high concentration to one of lower concentration. This difference is called the concentration gradient. Molecules move down the concentration gradient.
Safety Issues: When shaking the model be careful to avoid striking other objects or people. Disclaimer (Warning - work in progress - may be incomplete)
Equipment Issues: This model may break if dropped.
Parts:
Copyright © 2000 Instructions:
(1) Turn the model so that the red beads are on top and shake until all white beads separate into the lower compartment.
(2) Have the students verify that there are about equal volumes on each side.
(3)Shake vigorously until much of the white beads have migrated to the other side.
(4)Discuss the role of the semipermeable membrane.
