Pouring the LN2. Be careful not to spill. The LN2 is boiling at 63.18 K. ASU copyright With a temperature of 63.18K and a pressure of .125 x 10^5 Pa the nitrogen turns to a solid. You could call it solid air since the oxygen would remain a gas at this temperature. ASU copyright Solid nitrogen. ASU copyright The ELMO projects the image on the screen. This is what the students see. ASU copyright All three phases at once. ASU copyright

triple point apparatus petri dish Styrofoam ring |
||||
| Copyright © 2000 | Instructions: Place Styrofoam ring in apparatus. Place Petri dish on Styrofoam ring Carefully fill dish with LN2 being careful not to spill any since it may crack the apparatus. Put on the lid and turn on the pump. Once the solid is formed reduce the pressure so that the gauge shows 24 inches of Hg and it will melt again. Now tighten the valve and the solid quickly reappears. If it takes a long time to freeze use the valve to outgas some vapor. Run the pump for 30 minutes after you are done to clear vapor from the oil. |
